Assembling a Wildlife Observation Tower

Assembling a Wildlife Observation Tower

We planted our wildlife food plot in the spring, focusing on sweet and nutritious crops that deer and other animals would be attracted to. We toyed with the idea of building a wildlife observation tower overlooking the food plots, and we’re pleased to say we made that goal a reality! Take a look as we assemble our first wildlife observation tower on Thistle Downs Farm!

Recapping Our Wildlife Food Plot

The two crops we focused mostly on were soybeans and sugar beets, though we also planted forage turnips and red clover. Fast-forward six months and it’s clear we made the right choice. The soy beans and clover were popular when the weather was warmer, but now that it’s winter, the deer have been CRUSHING the sugar beets.

Outdoor Adventure Sports Management

In addition to contributing heavily to the Granville Business Department in the traditional sense, my dad, Terry, has been instrumental in creating curriculum that lends itself to the industries pertinent to Upstate New York. These courses include both Agricultural Management as well as Outdoor Adventure Sports Management.

Outdoor Adventure Sports Management in particular, focuses on the intricacies of building and maintaining wildlife populations. In the face of constant threats to habitat, learning how to promote and advocate for deer and other wildlife are crucial to their well-being. For more details on how to build wildlife population stability, check out the wildlife food plot articles below!

Building the Wildlife Observation Tower

Dad’s Outdoor Adventure Sports Management class did an amazing job of fabricating the observation tower. They constructed it right behind the high school over the course of a couple weeks. They used all pressure treated lumber to give the tower longevity. 4x4s were used for the legs of the tower, and were attached to the platform with heavy-duty brackets. 2x6s were used for the braces to give the tower stability and by the time they were all in place, the structure was rock solid. Check out some of the pics of the build below!

Conclusion

Make sure to check out the entire video of our Wildlife Observation Tower Build! This was a fun project and will provide an excellent opportunity to monitor our food plots with minimal interference.

As we’ve said in previous articles, we have no immediate plans to hunt our food plots. Our main focus is to build our wildlife population and provide a stable habitat for deer and other foragers to call home. We will make sure to provide updates on our food plot so please check in regularly so you stay up-to-date on everything that’s happening on Thistle Downs Farm!

Take Care,

Cody
