Homemade Tomato Sauce Using Cherry Tomatoes
Our cherry tomatoes are finally starting to get ripe which means a whole slew of tomato-friendly recipes in the near future! But there’s nothing I like more than some garden fresh tomato sauce. So today I’m going to show you how to make homemade tomato sauce with fresh cherry tomatoes straight from your garden!
A Note About Cherry Tomatoes
Cherry tomatoes have a relatively high water content compared to other tomatoes like plum tomatoes and Roma’s. For this reason, they typically aren’t best suited for sauce making. But this recipe is specifically designed to use your cherry tomatoes to create a wonderfully thick and flavorful tomato sauce. So give it a try and you won’t be disappointed!

Ingredients
The beauty of this homemade tomato sauce recipe is you can really use however many cherry tomatoes you have on hand. Just choose a pan size appropriate to the amount of tomatoes you have.
You’ll need:
A whole bunch of cherry tomatoes (Recommend 4-6 cups)
2-3 cloves garlic (or more for you garlic lovers)
A few sprigs of fresh basil
Olive oil
Salt to taste (optional)
Preparation ~10 min
To prepare your cherry tomatoes, just remove the stems and slice each tomato in half.
Next, peel and mince your garlic cloves.. You can also mince them with a food processor if you’d like but I prefer the satisfaction of chopping them by hand.
Cooking ~30 min
Preheat a few tablespoons of olive oil in a sauce pan over medium heat.
Once pre-heated, add your minced garlic and give it a quick stir. After about a minute, they should begin to brown and become fragrant.
Once your garlic starts to brown, it’s time to add your halved cherry tomatoes. Add them all to the pan and give them a quick stir.
At this point, you should drop your heat slightly to medium-low and then continue to stir your tomatoes every few minutes.
You’ll start to notice the juices from your tomatoes being released into the pan and it’ll start to simmer. This is exactly what you want.
Continue stirring every few minutes and as your sauce simmers, you can add your basil and stir it right in.
Continue this process for about half an hour on medium-low heat. Just stir occasionally and allow the juices to continue to evaporate off. Patience is key here. It will take a while for your sauce to simmer down. The longer you let it simmer, the thicker it will get.
You’ll slowly see the sauce start to thicken up nicely and once it reaches your desired consistency, you’re all set!
If you’d like you can add some salt to taste but make sure to try it first because you may decide it doesn’t need anything extra. Plate it however you like and enjoy!
Conclusion
This homemade cherry tomato sauce recipe is an excellent way to use up any excess cherry tomatoes you may have. This is a simple, satisfying recipe that you can make on the fly, and it’s sure to impress your friends, not to mention it tastes absolutely delicious!
