Spoil Your Pups With Homemade Pumpkin Peanut Butter Dog Treats!

Puppies need love too… So show them you care by making these simple pumpkin peanut butter dog treats!

Homemade Pumpkin Peanut Butter Dog Treats

If there are two defining factors that come to mind when thinking about Thistle Downs Farm, it would probably be the pumpkins and the puppies.

Each year we have an incredible pumpkin harvest which we share with the community, and each day we are blessed with the love and energy our three border collies (and our mutt, Gizmo). So today my mom, Jackie, took a bit of our harvest and made some delicious homemade pumpkin peanut butter dog treats for the pack!

Credit Where Credit is Due

This isn’t a Thistle Downs original recipe, unlike many of the other recipes we share. We actually found the inspiration for this recipe on a wonderful holistic health and wellness lifestyle blog called Eating Bird Food. Check out the original recipe and post, HERE!

We tested several other pumpkin dog treat recipes with mixed results, but this recipe ultimately won due to its simplicity-it only calls for five ingredients and three simple steps. Not to mention our dogs absolutely LOVE them!

The only difference between the original recipe and what mom did, is she puréed her own pumpkin in her food processor instead of using canned pumpkin, and also doubled the recipe, using just slightly less flour.

Ingredients

1-3/4 cup whole wheat flour
1 cup natural peanut butter*
1/2 cup puréed pumpkin
1/2 cup beef stock
2 tsp cinnamon

Ingredients for pumpkin peanut butter dog treats

*As Brittany from Eating Bird Food points out, make sure the peanut butter doesn’t contain Xylitol, as this artificial sweetener is toxic to dogs. We used natural peanut butter in our recipe which contains no added sweeteners.

Baking Steps

The steps for this recipe are incredibly easy. Just combine the flour, peanut butter, pumpkin, and cinnamon in a mixing bowl, and stir in the beef stock until a thick dough forms.

Combine all ingredients and mix well until a thick dough forms

Once all the ingredients are well combined, roll the dough into a ball and then with a lightly floured rolling pin, roll out the dough into a 1/4” thick layer.

Now just take your favorite cookie cutter shapes and cut out the treats using all of the dough.

Roll out the dough and cut into desired shapes

Place the dog treats on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper and bake them for 15-20 minutes at 350 degrees, or until golden brown. They should be hard to the touch when finished.

Storage

Store these dog treats in an airtight container such as a Ziploc bag or Tupperware. This will prevent them from getting stale. I don’t think they last long enough around our pups to get stale though…
